The Somerset Police Department, in conjunction with the Somerset School Department, will once again hold a Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) Youth Activity program. The free 16 week program, open to boys and girls in grades 4-8, is being held Saturday mornings at the Somerset Middle School from 9AM until 12PM
Somerset Police Chief Joseph Ferreira cited the success of last year's program, in deciding to offer the program again this year despite the elimination of state community policing funds. "The Somerset Police Department remains committed to its mission of Community Policing by finding alternative funding methods for such important programs."
PAL is a youth crime prevention program that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between police officers and youth. It is based on the conviction that young people - if reached early enough - can develop strong positive attitudes towards police officers during their lives journey toward the goal of maturity and good citizenship.
The PAL program brings youth under the supervision and positive influence of law enforcement officers while expanding public awareness about the role of a police officer while reinforcing the responsible values and attitudes instilled in young people by their parents.
